Monologen En dåres försvarstal är en sen men skarp replik från den frisinnade skådespelaren Siri von Essen till sin fd man August Strindberg, som skrev den skandalösa och djupt laddade romanen ”En dåres försvarstal” om deras passionerade och destruktiva äktenskap mellan 1877-1891.

The monologue is a late but sharp response from the free spirited actress Siri von Essen to her ex husband August Strindberg, who wrote the scandalous and remarkable novel ”Defense of a fool” about their passionate, creative yet destructive marriage btw 1877-1891. 

I Strindbergs förord till sin roman om skilsmässan från Siri von Essen talar han om en bok han inte publicerar, ”en vansinnig kvinnas bekännelser”.Detta blev vi intresserade av. Med Siris blick ser vi på denna skandal, och låter henne bemöta anklagelserna mot henne. Vi undersöker vem hon var och vilka vi är i förhållande till Henne. Bilden av henne som framträdde förvånade oss mycket. Förutom att vara konstnär, mamma, firad skådespelare och en fallen kvinna i etablissemangets ögon var hon precis lika modern och passionerad som Strindberg, och ännu mer radikal visar det sig. Samtidigt var hon sanslöst utlevande. Till exempel klädde hon sig till man,var med i Dramatens herrklubb, gick på horhus samt var väldigt sexuellt undersökande. Hon och August hade ett jämlikhetskontrakt och hon var inte ensam. Hon befann sej i en kontext där andra kvinnor gjorde likadant. Vem var hon? Hon verkar så fri och modig. Varför vet vi inget om henne och andra kvinnor som levde så? Där tar föreställningen avstamp, med utgångspunkt från texter av bla Strindberg, Rimbaud, Jelinek, Lacan, Engels, Schopenhauer, Butler och Heidegger .

In Strindbergs preface to the novel he talks about a book he did not publish, ”a profane woman’s confessions”. That’s where the idea got started. We follow ”the investigation” of this scandal through the eyes of Siri von Essen. We let her respond to the allegations against her. Who was she? Except for being an artist, a mother, a celebrated actress, a fallen woman in the eyes of the establishment, she was just as modern and passionate as Strindberg, and even more radical and free spirited as the story unfolds. She and August had an equality contract, and she was not alone. She was in a context where traditional values of family and gender was being questioned. Still – she was outragous – She had lovers of all ages, men and women and the pair of them caused scandals everywhere they went. When she worked at the Royal dramatic theater she joined the men’s club, dressed up in her husbands suit and went to brothels.  She seems so free and courageous, even compared to our time. Even compared to me. Who was she, and who are we in relation to her? With texts that move freely between the worlds of Strindberg, Rimbaud, Jelinek, Lacan, Engels, Schopenhauer, Butler och Heidegger

About The novel ”Defense of a fool”.

The book was written in French 1887-1888, translated and published in German as Die Beichte eines Thoren, ”a foolish bitch”, 1893, for which Strindberg was prosecuted in Germany in 1895, it was published in French as Le plaidoyer d’un fou and in 1914, after Strindberg’s death,  a ”light version” of the book was published in Swedish translation by John Landquist. In 1999, it was published in full as no. 25 in the National Edition with the French text translated by Hans Levander.The novel caused scandal in Sweden, although Strindberg never published it in Swedish. It was named ”the most horrific book of Strindberg and consequently of any Swedish writer ever written” but also ”one of the most remarkable novels in the newer European literature.”
